A big night for the two sides making up the numbers in Group A. If either side was to get out of this phase then victory against their weakest opposition was needed. Spurs with 2 defeats desperately needed the win. A victory for Atletico would have put them in a relatively strong position given they have played their away games.
On the night the away side peppered the Tottenham goal like an Andy Banks sphincter ripple. Sadly like Banks, Atletico got nothing in the middle of the goal and shots were sprayed wide of the mark. A shit sorry shot count of 6-17 shows the away sides domination that was helped by David Silva playing CDM for plenty of the game.
Manager Simon Marsh commented "I think 4 points is a decent haul from the 3 away games but we still have it all to do now. Man City's victory was the worst possible result for us and we will need to win 2 of our home games to have a chance of progression".
Feel we did well at the start of the game but losing Orkun Kökcü through an injury had big influence on our performance. David Silva isn’t at the same level as Kökcü and no defensive midfielder either. As the game progressed the visitors started to control the game and was by far the better team. We also lost Angelino through a red card after an hour played.
But we fought well and secured our first point of the group stages. We’re well an our way out of the tournament but we’ll give it a go in the last three games. There might come a time where we start to give back up players game time and if we’re already out I see no point playing our star players from the start.
A tough night for us at St James Park with the home side playing the counter attack game very well. We took the lead on the quarter hour mark but the home side always looked the more likely and by the midway point in the second period were leading by three goals to one. A late goal from ourselves made the tie look very close but it was The Maggpies who where the deserved victors. The group now looking like it may well be for a fight for second place as Real Madrid sit six points clear of the rest.
This run of form is well shocking, and it doesn't look like it will end soon. Thought we'd lined up correctly but then again C is our barren approach so no surprises. I felt we deserved a draw but it wasn't to be and we need a major reality check already.
Our champions league defence is practically over bar a huge element of fortune in the final 3 games which I can't see happening.
We'll see what we can do but we can't continue losing, but we'll done Barcelona.
PSG 1 Man city 3
Yet again our goalkeeper lets us down, being the worst performer of the round. When one 23 GK saves 8 shots from 9 faced, and the other saves 5 from 8, there is nothing you can do. We edged the stats and on most days would have come away with a draw, but our poor fortune continues. We need twice as many shots as our opponents to stand a chance of winning a game these days. Cant take any positives whatsoever from the game. 2 away games against Man city and ATM to come - really need to avoid defeats if we are to progress
GG Nick. I might finally beat you one day
Again we were lucky to win this game, as Roma were the better side. Im not moaning though, and am very grateful for the points coming our way. Unlucky mate you deserved more on the day.
Madrid sprung a surprise on Inter and captured the TA. 2 goals from Hot Rod gave the Los Bloncos the important win. Three wins from three in the group put's us on 9 points and with Villa failing against Newcastle everyone else is only on 3 points, which is obviously a great position to be in. We only need 1 point to make sure of qualification. GG GS.
We expected a close game and that's exactly what we got. The home side set up to counter our passing approach but midway through the 1st half it was Mahrez that scored the all important goal for us. Man Utd then changed tactics a couple of times but despite plenty chances for both sides we were able to see it out for a vital 3 points which puts us in a very strong position.
I've seen these kind of games enough to know that it could just as easily have gone the other way though and Steve will feel hard done by as it really was a 50/50 game. Our GK finally coming to the party certainly helped.
Long way to go yet so not counting our chickens, but we have to be happy with how things are sitting at the half way point.
There was no suprise, in honesty we were not worried that Madrid would play but more concentrating on our game and to take it to Madrid, we fancied our chances even with the strength of the Real Madrid side and tbh we competed, the game was even and we took an early lead to see if chopped off for some unknown reason and soon after found ourselfs behind going into half time. The game was swinging end to end really and we equalised on the 66th minute i honestly thought we would have taken the lead but Madrid dealt a hammer blow on the 82nd minute with the winner, we could have played for a point like many do but we went for it and deserved more but this is life. GG mate
Our third group game and we pick up our second win to make it six points from a possible nine which is a great return and sees us in a healthy position in the league.
The game today was one that may be a bit harsh on Gaz and his Lisbon side as the stats show that it was even a game as you will see this season with our finishing being the difference. Correa and Chiesa getting two of our goals before Sallai popped up from the bench to core late on and seal the win for us against Gaz who we havnt played for a whole so it was good to lock horns with him once again.
A great win was followed by the news that Lamptey had agreed a move to North London after days of talks so all in all a great night for the club.
