Terrible result for us that's 2 out of 2 for defeats not a great start to the campaign atall so gunna have to rethink my tactics and formation as clearly not working well done to monaco great win for them.
Feared the worst going 1-0 down, but stuck with A as the gap between the clubs is enough even without TA or HA, thankfully we equalised straight away and went on to comfortably win, with both strikers on the score sheet.
got knocked out R1 by Madrid last year so I’m pleased to have made it through, extra abs and money.
A great result for the Spaniards against higher opposition. We played a fairly cautious game that paid off in what was a very close and tight encounter. The breakthrough came shortly into the second period and it was front man Ajorque who fired home a powerful shot, his second in as many games to send Villarreal through to the next round, a stark difference to last seasons first round result when managerless Villarreal were totally humiliated in the days before Greaves took charge.
"A write off for us unfortunately before a ball was kicked, Atletico are a team thats buzzing off a great season last season, we are not, I think we actually played really well but it just didnt go our way and i wouldnt expect it to against a team as strong as Atletico, weve got a young team, probably one of the youngest in world football, its going to take time but we put on a half decent show against a team that is just on the outside of title aspirations I think this year, as soon as i saw the draw i thought it would be a learning game for us and it was exactly that, no ones going to have a tougher test than Celtic are with how the first week of fixtures have been drawn up, but hopefully we are gelling together in these tougher games to make the not so tough games a bit easier"
Valencia ran out comfortable winners at the Orange Velodrome, with Serge Gnabry scoring a brace and Bryan Iglesias adding two more.
The visitors were in control from the start and took the lead in the 45th(+4) minute through Gnabry, who headed home after a good corner from Rodrigo.
Gnabry doubled Valencia's advantage just two minutes later, this time finishing after a superb nutmeg on Martin Hinteregger .
Iglesias made it 3-0 in the 51st minute, latching onto a through ball from Rodrigo and slotting the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Marseille were reduced to 10 men in the 58th minute when Zubimendi was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Valencia were also reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Serge Gnabry was sent off for a nasty challenge on Samu Castillejo and a second bookable offence.
Valencia made it 4-0 in the 78th minute from the penalty spot, Iglesias converting after Samu Castillejo had fouled Ander Herrera.
The result means Valencia move on to Round Two and Marseille’s domestic cups hopes end in tears.
Man of the Match: Rodrigo (Valencia)
Rodrigo was a constant threat throughout the game and was involved in all four of Valencia's goals. He was also solid defensively and helped to keep Marseille at bay.

What's Next?
Valencia are away to Norwich City in the conference League on Thursday evening.
Really disappointing result for us. With the game at 1-1 we beat ourselves with a stupidly given away penalty and then an OG. We can't afford to make mistakes like that sadly. Only plus from the game for us was good performances from Konate and Kehrer who got themselves a nice amount of ABs.
Well played Tim, good luck for the next round.
Sporting Lisbon kicked off their EFL Cup quest with a dominate display against Conference side Ajax at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Sporting Lisbon decided to play on the front foot with Ajax looking to catch Lisbon out with a less cultured Long Ball approach.
Until the 13th minute both sides seemed to be cancelling each other out then Club Captain Robert Lewandowski went on a run before unleashing a power driver to give the Portuguese side the lead.
Ajax switched to Counter Attack but Lisbon could smell blood and were dominating possession and attacks culminating Mats Hummels creating a chance for Juan Mata who saw his initial effort hit the post before tapping the rebound into the back of the net to score for the 2nd game in a row and make the score 2-0 after just 19 minutes.
Sporting Lisbon tweak formation and moved to a passing approach as they looked to see the game out.
Despite Sporting Lisbon peppering the Ajax goal they could not add to the 2-0 score line but were able to limit Ajax to very little shots and the game ended 2-0 with Sporting Lisbon being in the hat for the 2nd round.
Sporting Lisbon dominated possession with 57% and created a massive 19 chances with 8 being on target, Ajax were limited to 4 chances with 3 of them being on target.

That was a comprehensive performance out their by my players tonight and it was great to see Robert and Juan getting on the score sheet for the 2nd game in a row.
Getting into the hat for the next round is the most important thing in the cup and I will be watching the draw closely hoping for another home draw.
A much closer game than anticipated after Celtic manager Sam Bradwell set up the away side perfectly. The only difference on the night was the extra quality for the home side who were clinical enough to create a flattering scoreline.
manager Simon Marsh commented “We are pleased to progress and we await the draw with anticipation hoping it will be kinder this time. It’s likely that we will get another EFL1 side but there are some conference sides that have made round 2 and we will prefer that option obviously. Credit to Sam Bradwell who did enough to make it difficult for us and with a bit of luck could have caused an upset on the night”
An impressive victory for us against a quality squad which sees us progress into the second round.
After Monday's 4-2 defeat in Barcelona, we knew we had to bounce back and we reverted back to the C tactic that has worked for us in the past and it gave us TA to start the game off.
After 18 minutes, A_Isak gave us the lead after an audacious lob that beat the Lazio goalkeeper. 17 minutes later and we had a firm grip of the tie as Antony scored his first goal for the club since joining pre season to double our lead to 2-0.
At this point we switched up pour tactics to P to match Lazio, however this 2 goal lead lasted less than 5 minutes as Lazio battled their way back into the game just prior to the break.
Lazio would have wanted to get into half time at 2-1 and come out in the second half searching for the goal that would level the time, but we scored our 3rd of the game through MOTM F_Wirtz on 44 minutes to restore the two goal advantage.
The second half was P vs P but turned into a bit of a non event and we ran out 3-1 winners to secure our place in Round 2.
Statistically it was an even game, with us slightly shading the stats so Lazio will feel hard done by, perhaps a 1 goal win would have been more appropriate.
Frankfurt 1-1 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich win 4-2 on penalties.
Wow. A valiant effort from the conference side. A game that perhaps could've gone either way. We were in trouble once we missed the first penalty, and some lazy sheeting saw no changes to the line up if we did make it to penalties. To be honest we didn't expect it! We unfortunately lose one of our best defenders for our league game tomorrow, but even though we are out of the cup, we are still yet to lose in normal time to managing legend, JB. GG mate, we just couldn't compete against the far superior shooting!
PSG 1 BARCA 2
Clearly this team/manager isnt as good as people make out. Beaten yet again by the EFL GOAT in our back yard. Played our strongest team and really went for it but just couldnt match our opponents. Going to be a long season but at least we now get a good few tuesdays off.
GG Livi
A complete performance. This could have been a tricky away tie against a competant Leipzig but we did the business like a well oiled machine. 4 of the 5 goals to our front 4 which is always good. GG Mike best of luck in the league.
Bit of a smash n grab here as we were quite fortunate to get the win .. whilst we shaded possession they created far more chances ...
After the opening day defeat, and being away, Nunez dropped back to be an AM on the basis that we would create less ..
A Jose left footer (relishing his role as skipper!) settled the tie on 18 mins
Bender, Toby and Musso played well at the back, whilst Erikson was quiet and subbed off, amid rumours he could be on his way from the club this week, one of the few remaining from the squad Raingod inherited 2 seasons ago ...
