  • Your top ten hits of all time

We recently did this at work. Everyone had to pick their top 10 hits of all time, could be chart hits or album tracks. It was really difficult to do, so many hits to choose from that I couldn't fit in. I could have done numerous top 10 charts and liked them all as much as each other but eventually plumped for this list. So here is my top 10 of all time, in no particular order:

Nights in white satin - The Moody Blues
    Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
Whiter shade of pale - Procol Harum
Stairway to heaven - Led Zeppelin
    American pie - Don Mclean
    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Brothers in arms - Dire Straits
Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams
    Eloise - Barry Ryan
The ballad of john and Yoko - The Beatles

You might need to be of a certain age to know some of those hits lol. Anyone else care to give a top 10?

Interesting choices ian, mine will not be similar. I’ve gone for a couple more recent ones, and some that just have historic meaning for me, and kind of in a top to bottom order:

Atreyu - Right Side of the Bed
Bullet for my Valentine - Hand of Blood
Disturbed - Down with the Sickness
    Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country
    Eminem - Fall
    Don Broco - Everybody
    Hamilton - You’ll be back
    Bloodhound Gang - Mope
    Enter Shikari - The Feast
Funeral for a Friend - History

A lot of these just have a lot of meaning to me, from a time that music was a huge part of my life.

Loads of other ones I could have thrown in, dependant of my mood. Nowadays I listen more to punk rock, but nothing will beat the greatest songs

Like Jason, a lot of these have personal meaning. I could probably fill the list with tracks from queen and Iron Maiden, but ive restricted to one track per band. Not in any order of preference, but ive amplified with a comment of why each track is in there...

      Alter Bridge - Blackbird
I just love this song, and it will be played at the funeral of my wife lol. Had it read as a poem at my mums funeral and it will always evoke memories of lost ones every time i hear it
      Rod Stewart - Sailing
I dont especially like the the guy but this was one of my Dads favourite songs, and talks of the pain of losing a loved one and eventually crossing the void to be reunited. Again, will always be the song which makes me think of dad
Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle
Seen Ugly Kid Joe play this song live a few times, but prefer the original. A warning of why not to put work before family, and i have followed his warning as best i could, after being on the receiving end as a child
Queen - Who wants to live forever
Another song about dying lol. By one of my favourite bands from one of my favourite films. Also my funeral song
      Disturbed - Sound of Silence
Was always a fan of Simon and Garfunkel, but when i heard this version it just blew me away. More about the sound than the lyrics
Evanescence - Bring Me to Life
Sometimes you hear a song the first time and just think 'Wow'. Another where its more about the song composition and melody rather than the words
Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy Name
My list wouldnt be complete without a track from my favourite band of the last 40 years. Could have filled the list many times over with this band, and simply picked the song i most enjoy watching them perform live
      Magnum - Sacred Hour
A guilty pleasure. Found this band in the 80s - still going, but never hit the heights they deserved (made it onto TOTP once in the 90s). Early stuff way better than current, and i will always stop what im doing to listen to this track when i hear it
Halestorm (featuring Amy Lee) - Break In
Amy Lee (Evanescence) gets an extra mention in the list. I love a strong female vocal and these 2 complement each other perfectly. The song is about opening up completely to that special someone, feeling safe with them, putting all trust in them.
      Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Continuing with the strong female theme, always been a fan of Kate Bush, but chose this track because it a song from my youth, when i was brought up in Bronte country. For some reason the song just resonates with me.

Going one step further, on the flip side, one song i detest and refuse to listen too
      Wham - Last Christmas
Out around the time i was at 6th Form and all my mates were pairing up at parties Christmas time, and ugly kid Ed couldnt find anyone and was often sat in the corner alone!

In no particular order here are my top ten tunes:

        Barracuda – Heart
Rainy Day Dream Away – Jimi Hendrix
Minstrel in the Gallery – Jethro Tull
        Cowboy Song – Thin Lizzy
        Nantucket Sleighride – Mountain
        Alright Now – Free
Palm Trees (Love Guitar) – Steve Hillage
        Good Morning - Blackfoot
Achilles Last Stand – Led Zeppelin
        Grendel – Marillion

Too many Led Zep songs I love but finally went with Achilles Last Stand because it takes me back to the amazing Knebworth performance in 1979 and my long lost youth.
Almost in was Sweet Home Alabama or Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd but I couldn’t decide which one I liked best. Plus Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica and Eruption by Van Halen were also very close to being in too.
To be honest though like Ian I could’ve picked several very different top ten’s and been happy with them all lol

I thought I'd have a crack at this, but didn't realise how hard it would be to narrow it down to 10!
Some are songs of my youth, some just great songs
          In no particular order -

          One way - The Levellers
          Devils haircut - Beck
          Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
Temple of Love - Sisters of Mercy
          American Idiot - Green Day
Welcome to the black parade - My Chemical Romance
Def con one - Pop will eat itself
No one knows - Queens of the stone age
She sells sanctuary - The Cult

Honorable mentions to GMF - John Grant, Just Because - Jane's addiction, Crawl - Kings of Leon, Cannonball - The Breeders.

Love a few of these, but for me, mollys chamber is the ultimate kings of Leon song

Very tricky. I have gone with possibly the first ten to really jump in my head. I have based some of this on hearing some of the songs live which perhaps have pushed them higher (I.e fear of the dark live gives me basically an orgasm). I have gone with songs I have loved for 20+ years (minus Kasabian)..
          In no particular order:

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
Judas Priest - Beyond the Realms of Death
          AC/DC - Girls Got Rhythm
          Pantera - Cemetery Gates
Red Hot Chili Peppers - My friends
          Kasabian - Thick as Thieves
          Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
Guns N Roses - November Rain
          Testament - Return to Serenity
          Scorpions - Wind of Change

I am not even happy with this list as some bangers from Def Leppard, deep purple, Sabbath. Zeppelin, Van Halen, and others failed to make the cut!

This ten would probably vary each day I tried to compile it!

Not much in the way of modern music in there which proves one of two things. Either we are all old farts or modern music is as shit as I thought it was. I'll go for the latter lol.

I’ve chosen a couple modern ones (by that I mean last 5 years), but I think how it works is there’s a period of time when you are really into your music, then life gets busy and you run out of time to listen to it, have kids etc. hence why most of us are picking older stuff

The older we get the more we all like to Reminisce and you often link those good times to music….. well I certainly do. Like Laid by James don’t think it’s on my list but that song triggers some amazing memories and feelings for me.
As someone else said, I could pick an entirely different list every day to be honest.
I would say you are right on both statements Ian!!
Season 2 Premier League Champions - Leeds
Season 2 Conference Champions - Porto
