Sometimes ESMS can just do one. Home advantage, better squad and for large parts of the game our E countered their C and we lost. Pile of poop.
Sums up the season and lack of consistency, think our attention will turn to next season and making a promotion attempt. Don’t think it’ll happen this campaign.
Played Watford.
A very narrow defeat this one against high flying Middlesbrough. Can't fault the lads for effort today as they were very unlucky to come out of this match with nothing to show. From start to finish the game swung one way and then the other and it was the home side that managed to take all the points in the end which was harsh on my lads. As usual we now have to dust ourselves down and go again.
With rumours of a permanent manager being lined up by the Boro board, a 7 goal thriller to sign off as caretaker manager feels right.
We came in giving our opponents TA and on 11 minutes, they turned that advantage into the games first goal.
This lead would be short lived as we scored on 15 & 19 minutes to not only draw level but take the lead ourselves.
A Villarreal response 4 minutes later brought the sides level once again and we had a real game on our hands.
A crazy last few minutes of the first half saw us take a 3-2 lead on 43 minutes, only to see the visitors draw level again within a minute but that's not where the half ended.
We scored our 4th of the game in the first minute of additional time at the end of the half to go in at the break a goal to the good.
With 7 goals in the first half, it comes as a huge surprise that there were none in the second, with us seeing out the win to record another 3 points....a result that puts us back into 2nd, chasing the in form Feyenoord.
Statistically it was fairly even with Villarreal shading it, however we'll take the 3 points and perhaps sign off with this thrilling back and forth game.
Always going to be a tough game when you play one of the top managers caretaking in this division and so it proved. When new signing Dele Alli popped us in front late in the first half I thought we might be on for at least a win. But it all unraveled as we conceded a penalty only two minutes later and up stepped the Conference's top scorer Gabriel Veron to slot it home. Makes it worse when Veron is one of those players we have kept tabs on throughout this season and tried to sign a couple of times, good decision by Feyenoord to keep him! We had tactical advantage but it just shows that the dodgy E tactic is still no match for a good C tactic and no evidence here that C has been nerfed. Anyway the upshot was that despite the closeness between the two sides Feyenoord made their chances count as they grabbed what turned out to be the winning goal just after the restart. Very disappointing result for us, but we are still in there and if we can just get some sort of consistency in our game we can push back up there.
Very well played Nick.
Next up is a home game against Jon Pike's Bristol City which will no doubt prove to be another stern test of our promotion credentials.
On a decent bit of form at last, with 3 wins in the last 4, however we were lucky here to be facing a fellow struggler with our keeper out. We decided to try and score more than them rather than clam up to protect our sub keeper, and fortunately it just about paid off.
It was a fairly even game with plenty of chances and luckily the keeper did ok.
We raced into a 3 nil lead, and had to sweat as they came back into it late on, ul dude
When Ajax travelled to Derby earlier in the season we took an early lead through Sanson in the 13th minute before goals from Sane and Lacazette secured all three points for the away side.
This time around we travelled to Amsterdam on the back of a reasonable run of form, apart from our previous match against Middlesbrough.
In common with a lot of our matches this season there was an early goal in the match only this time it was scored for Derby by captain Icardi, within 10 inutes of kick-off we had a second as Koopmeiners scored his second of the season.
Thirty minutes into the game we scored a third as Fischer scored following his recent restoration to the first team squad and we got to the hlaf time whistle with a 3-0 lead.
Both sides made changes in the second half which disrupted the flow of the game somewhat and the final result reflected that.
Statistically we probably didn't deserve this outcome, Ajax had a lot more of the play but could only manage 1 chot on target while we managed 3 shots on target and incredibly scored with all 3 of those shots!
Good game Alfredo, good luck for the rest of the season.
