BONANZA DETAILS COMING SOON
We've struggled against smaller clubs this season, losing to both Rangers & Lisbon, so was taking nothing for granted in this game. We got a couple of goals and then mistakenly pushed Nacho forward creating space for Sociedad to get one back. Two more goals either side of half time plus a sending off effectively ended the game.
Ironically we did worse against 10 men with some wayward shooting in the 2nd half. But happy to be in the last four as we seek to defend our title.
Three good sides in the semi's will make it tough. Would like to avoid Barca in the draw if possible though.
Good game Derek, We gave it a pop hoping to score the early goal then clam up, but it was not to be.
At least the side got some decent abs, though the red card was unwanted! Good luck in the rest of the competition
Another humdinger of an El Clásico and as has been the case in the past few we appeared to have the luck on our side as 2 late red cards for the home side - who had just fought back from 2-0 down - gave us the chance to pinch it at the death through a free kick from Jesus.
We were looking in a very strong position at HT with a 2-0 lead so you have to give Madrid credit for forcing their way back to 2-2 but the 2 quick red cards immediately after their equaliser very much killed it for them. Steve will feel aggrieved as that kind of thing just can't be accounted for.
Stats wise it was a very even game but as an away side you need a bit of luck to win at the Bernabeu and today was our day.
Absolutely delighted to progress and it's a very strong looking last 4 line up.
Out of respect on request. wasnt able to say anything on the result till the opposing manager had got home and read the game,
I want to say smashed them off the park, but in truth, even with advantage, we conceded possession, passes, shots blah de blah de blah, same old, we arent dominating games, and if youd said id win 1-0 against the stronger side and better manager, i would have run away with your arm,,,
AB will be a bit disappointed, but that seems to be the season for him and a few others, a very mixed bag, smash 8 in v Atleti and lose 1-0 to me..
somewhat expected the C, so i went gung ho and out of the comfort zone, E..
and got the goal, Pulisic trying to repay more of his outlay from Sevilla.
And this shows how much the game was against us, under fire DDG MOM,,, you couldnt write it.
Our cup run comes to an end....This competition hasn't been kind to us until this season, where we've had some good results however, we've come up against a team better than us and have come unstuck.
Drum read me like a book and countered us from the off and after an even first 60 minutes, the visitors took the lead shortly after and we didn't go for it which is an error on my part and they saw the game out without much fuss.
Statistically we were the better team but not by much and we didn't deserve the win really.
"We're all gutted about this result. Out of the cup and 1 of 3 chances to win a trophy off the board. Barca are a quality side and they took a 0-2 lead before half time. A stern half time bollocking brought us back into it with sub Harvey Elliot scoring a late leveller to make it 2-2. At this point I fancied our chances if the game went to extra time or penalties. Unfortunately Diaz and Mendy both quickly got sent off which saw us reduced to 9 men and in disaray. We did move Locatelli into the back line to make it a 4-man defensive unit so we planned for and did the best we could for this circumstance, but it was not enough as Barca scored right away with the resulting free kick for a late winner. No arguements here. Both tackles were ugly, and both players deserved to see red. We will take it on the chin. Best of luck to Barca in the competition going forward.
Unfortunately though now we will need to regroup and rethink our tactical plans for the away trip to Lisbon with our best defender and forward missing. This undoubtedly put's Lisbon now as favourites for that tie together with the home advantage, so anything gained there will be a bonus. It's time for 16 rated Yoshida to step up and do the job we signed him for now."
