A big game away to a big club the Sporting Lisbon faithful travelled away in numbers to the San Siro with most of them thinking that a draw would be a good result especially as this was their 2nd away trip in the first two games of Group A.
Windebank threw a curve ball with a new formation and the dreaded European tactic away from probably expecting the Counter Attack from the usually conservative AC Milan.
Matias threw a curve ball and himself used a different tactic that he had not used before this season and AC Milan also setup European tactic.
In the 4th minute AC Milan took the lead via Schuurs with a looping effort that beat the stranded Lopes.
Windebank kept his unusual formation and went on the attack and AC Milan slotted back into the counter.
Both sides appeared to be having equal amount of the game and a lot of fouls were going on and yellow cards being thrown out and you could see how much both sides wanted to win.
In the 30th minute Skriniar took out Rick Karsdorp with a nasty tackle and the referee gave him a early bath for a 2nd bookable offence.
Surely Sporting Lisbon had enough fire power on the pitch to get something out of this game especially against a three man defence.
The answer in the first half was no and the half time whistle went with AC Milan 1-0 up.
Sporting Lisbon were getting a lot of actions but really could not break down a well drilled AC Milan side.
With time running out the San Siro erupted when Simeone slotted in the rebound off the post in the 79th minute to make it 2-0. However Lopes was fouled in the build up play and the goal was thankfully ruled out.
There was renewed optimism in the away section of the ground as they hoped could grab a equaliser and get something from the game.
This optimism had turned to despair when the 4th official indicated four minutes of injury time and the score was still 1-0. It looked like the well drilled team from Italy were going to win all three points with 10 men.
All of a sudden Robert Lewandowski held the ball up and slotted a great ball through to the stampeding Frenki De Jong who calmly flicked the ball pass Maignan in the AC Milan goal.
They had done it Sporting Lisbon had pulled level the scores were all equal the relief on Windebank's face was there for all to see.
Just as the Windebank sat back down in the dugout BOOM!!!!
Robert Lewandowski chested down the ball and hit a rocket first time that slipped through Maignan hands and into the goal. It was the 93rd minute and Sporting Lisbon had robbed the great AC Milan side for what looked like an unlikely victory four minute earlier.
AC Milan controlled the possession with 58% and created 11 chances to Sporting Lisbon's 8, AC Milan also had more shots on target with 4 to 3.
Make no doubt about these results dont usually happen for Sporting Lisbon and they got a get out of jail free card today, but the Sporting Lisbon faithful, players and Windebank will not be complaining.

What the hell just happened out there? I tried something different today and it really looked like it was going to back fire. AC Milan done a job on us and I refused to change formation.
I was just thinking about the roasting I was going to give the players and extra training when they go and pull a rabbit out of the hat and now I have to give them a day off coz I need a rest myself.
We are in a tough group and have played both our opening fixtures away to great sides and managers. In the back of my mind I was thinking if we could get 2 points in the opening 2 games we would be in a good position to progress from the group with 3 of the final 4 games being at home.
However we have maximum points and a five point lead over Newcastle and AC Milan. Qualification is ours to throw away and we need to make sure we do not allow that to happen.
Good game Matias unlucky mate fortune was shining down on my side today
class display from rangers. We deserved nothing, Rodrigo de Paul was sent off on 6 minutes. Poor decision from him, loose cannon and will be disciplined by the club.
More on the game, stats we deserved to lose, and blatantly the quality we showed got us nowhere.
back to the drawing board. New line up, trial some new tactics.
Not the best result in the world top be honest but at least it's not another defeat. Performance was OK. Lot's of lads creeping up towards rating up, wether that makes any difference who knows, one can only hope.
Lot's of games to go in the group stage still so hopefully we find some form to get through and really challenge for this. The league is already a write off so we really do need a cup run or even a cup win.
Decent result away I suppose two draws in two in the comp.
Played Lee.
Season 2 Premier League Champions - Leeds
Season 2 Conference Champions - Porto
Genuinely pissed, we should could have won the game, 2 home games 2 draws. Coupled with the fact 2 Ts in the group. uphill battle to try claw back the deficit in terms of goal difference and points, but we will definitely try. Overall good performance by Mike's side which is great to see.
